What is Tadalafil (Cialis)?

Tadalafil (Cialis) is a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved prescription medicine used to treat (ED). It is also used to treat the symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia - BPH).

Tadalafil is the active ingredient in the brand Adcirca. Adcirca is prescribed to treat high blood pressure in your lungs, known as pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), and improve the ability to exercise. It does this by causing the blood vessels in the lungs to relax. This increases the supply of blood to the lungs and reduces the workload of the heart. Both men and women can take Tadalafil for PAH however, women cannot take Tadalafil to treat ED.

Tadalafil is also the active ingredient of the branded treatment Cialis. While both medications have similar effectiveness in treating ED, there may be minor differences in the other added ingredients and price.

How does Tadalafil work?

Tadalafil works by raising levels of blood flow to the penis, which tells other chemicals in the body to trigger which reduces the blood vessels in the penis.

Tadalafil has a 3-4-fold success rate in women who are unable to produce and/or maintain had spontaneous erections in a controlled study.
